Galt has come a long way from the farm town it started as, and most of that growth arrived in one stretch between the late nineties and the mid two thousands. Those subdivisions went up quickly on heavy adobe clay, the kind that turns to sticky paste in January and splits open like a dry lakebed in July. Concrete poured on that ground does not stand much of a chance long term.

Adobe clay moves more than most homeowners realize. It swells noticeably when saturated and shrinks back as it dries, and a Galt yard runs that full cycle every single year. Anything rigid sitting on top eventually loses that argument.
Pavers win it by refusing to fight. The surface is made of separate units, so the ground can rise and fall underneath while the field stays interlocked and level. When one area does settle, that area gets reset rather than the whole patio getting demolished.
Shade is scarce in the newer parts of town, where street trees are still young and lots sit open to full sun and open to wind. A lighter paver with some texture keeps the surface usable in the afternoon and cuts the glare that comes off a bright slab.

Our first step is a walkthrough looking at grade, downspouts, irrigation, and how water currently leaves the yard. On clay lots that last question matters more than any other, because trapped water is what sets the movement in motion to begin with.
Excavation on adobe takes patience and good timing. We dig out enough soil to build a real base, and we watch moisture in the ground as we compact, since clay compacted too wet or too dry simply will not hold. The base goes in and gets compacted in layers until it behaves like a solid platform.
Pavers are then laid to the approved pattern, cut clean along the house and any curves, and held at the perimeter with rigid edge restraint. Polymeric sand fills the joints and hardens so the field stays tight against wind and hose water.
We finish with a wash down, complete removal of spoil and scrap, and a walk of the job with you so you know exactly what was built and what to expect through the first year.
Ray called about a driveway on the east side of Galt that had cracked in three separate places. The house went up in the early two thousands, the driveway held for about a decade, and then a couple of wet winters in a row let the clay underneath swell and settle unevenly.
We broke out and hauled off the old concrete, then dug deeper than the original excavation ever went. The clay came out, a thick aggregate base went in, and it got compacted in lifts until the plate compactor barely left a mark.
Ray picked a heavy duty paver in a warm gray with a darker border running the length of the drive and across the apron. The project ran about nine days including demolition.
Two winters later it is still flat. He mentioned a neighbor across the street had the same cracking problem and called us on his recommendation.
